Vernet Magic
Vernet Writer Swami
INTRODUCTION
Known as Nail Writers or Swami, these gimmicks are the most powerful tools a magician or mentalist can use. It’s really very difficult to believe that with such a little and cheap gimmick you can produce the quantity and quality of effects that look like real miracles.
With the help of this subtle device you can write letters, numbers, check marks, etc. surreptitiously, in front of the audience, giving the impression it was written before the effect or event. It gives you lots of possibilities.
The history of Swami Gimmicks is not clear. Without any doubt the first persons who used, what we call Swami Gimmicks, were mediums and spiritualists. Long before, magicians and mentalists had adopted this wonderful gimmick to their arsenal of magical props. We can find it in magic literature for the first time in “Spirit Slate Writing and Kindred Phenomena” by William Robinson (Chung Ling Soo), published in 1898. There, the author describes it as a “Thumb Pencil Carrier”.
Since Robinson description many models have been developed: “Clip Nail”, “Under Nail”, “Band Writer” and “Thumb Tip Writer”. The most important innovation and improvement in this field came from Eric Mason’s bright mind that invented the “Boon Writer”. It’s an “adhesive kind” of writer. Mason described it as “The Greatest Little Gimmick in the World”, and we can guarantee this statement is absolutely true.
