Just imagine: The magician removes his black leather wallet from his pocket. Apart from the wallet his hands are empty “Before I left home this evening”, he says, “I took one card from a pack and I placed it here in the wallet.” He flips open the wallet and shows that there is one card, and one card only inside the wallet. “I want someone to assist by just naming any card; any one of the 53 cards in the pack.” Any spectator is invited to call out the name of any card.
“Wouldn’t it be a strange coincidence”, says magician, “if the card I’ve placed in the wallet happened to be that card. For years I’ve been saying, – ‘Some day, someone’s going to call out the 4 of Clubs’ (whatever card was called), ‘and I’m going to have a bloody miracle* … no-one ever has done, until tonight, but isn’t it a really strange coincidence that the card in the wallet is the 4 of Clubs!”
Immediately the card is turned around and shown…it is the 4 of Clubs. The wallet is shown to be otherwise completely empty. There are no ‘ifs and ands’, No forces, No limiting the selection of the card in any way. The spectator can choose any card in the pack including the Joker, and that is the card which you hold! The wallet is seen to contain only the one card and nothing else. Can you imagine a more compelling opening to any performance? .One which must stamp you as a real magician.
Is it a gag? – the audience may at first wonder. Any doubt is immediately dispelled when you. show that indeed the card you are holding in your bands is the card which was so freely thought-of. A trick that borders so much on the impossible as to be well-nigh unbelievable…No stooges, No confederates…you can get a well-known person in the audience to call out the name of any card, change his mind if he wishes, and that is the card which you are holding!
