The Mentalist takes off his wristwatch, pulls the stem and shows clearly that by turning the little knob on the side of the watch the hands are moved. The watch is given to a spectator who holds it face down and turns the knob at random, forward or back. Whenever she pleases she stops and pushes the knob in, locking in the time that has been randomly set by her actions.
 
As the watch is held face down, nobody—not even the assisting spectator herself—knows the time to which the hands were turned. The watch can be hidden or even pocketed; still the performer can tell the “correct” time (i.e., the time now showing on the wristwatch).
