A sealed envelope is placed on the table, it can be signed across the flap by a spectator to obviate any chance of a switch.
Eight cards are counted from the top of an ordinary, shuffled deck that has been cut by a spectator, and the cards are dealt into two piles. From this point the spectator makes the decisions of what actions take place.
First, he places one pile on top of the other. Which goes on which is his choice.
He picks up the resulting pile of eight cards and again he has a choice: the top card can be dealt on the table and the second go under the pile, or the first can be placed under the pile and the second dealt on the table.
A second card is dealt, but the choice is again with the spectator, then the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth. He finishes with two face-down piles of four cards each.
Now comes the first big surprise: The magician points out that the deck of cards was shuffled, cut and has been mixed and assembled into two piles, as freely dictated by the spectator himself. When the two piles of cards are turned over it is seen that one pile consists of all Spades (say), the other all Hearts!
There is yet another surprise, for now comes the spectator’s final choice. He is invited to discard one packet of cards and to leave the other on the table. There is no force involved.
The envelope is opened. Inside is one card and one card only. It is of the same suit as those on the table and when added to the four face-up cards makes a perfect running flush!
