This fun multi-step routine instantly feels like a classic with it’s roots inspired by the saw-a-lady-in-half style routine. You introduce a beautiful Mayan pyramid (reminiscent by the Mayan Chichen Itza pyramid located in Mexico) that has a long solid rod sitting on top. The rod can be inspected as solid. It is then placed back on the top of the pyramid where it is covered over with an ornately designed expanding cover. The cover has a motif of a soaring eagle engraved on it and is shown to either expand to cover the rod, or compress so that each end of the rod can be viewed, similar to an assistance head and feet poking out from a saw-in-half box. A solid knife/plate is introduced and positioned into a center slot on top of the cover. Then with a PUSH is seen to SLICE straight through the rod! All while either end of the rod is still visible.

The blade and covering is then removed to show the rod has indeed been sliced in 2. The 2 pieces can be removed and shown as 2 separate parts. The 2 pieces are then placed back on top of the pyramid as the magician says they’ll now try to fuse them back together. Placing the cover on top it is extended and this time 2 knives placed on either end of the cover as the magicians starts to push the pieces back together… suddenly the cover is pushed too far becoming smaller than the original rod?! With a puzzled look the magician uncovers the rod to reveal the rod has indeed been fused back together but has now been squished into a shorter stubbier rod. The magician now says they will attempt to fix it, by simply placing the cover back over the rod and extending the cover out once more as if to stretch the rod back to size. Instantly the cover is removed to now show the rod has been stretched back to it’s original length in one solid piece. The rod can then be handed back out if wanted.

Anthony Yap is an Australian artist with a passion for visual oddities, magical history and the esoteric arts. Influenced by a wide range of genres from mystical ancient cultures to Steampunk & Retrofuturism, Anthony’s creations are highly visual, and usually a lot more than what they seems at first glance.

Some artists naturally take to drawing, others modelling clay, for Anthony the virtual world of 3D Sculpting has been his medium of choice for over 2 decades and remained mostly contained to the virtual world until the rise of 3D Printing and additive manufacturing. Here Anthony saw an opportunity to rapidly take concepts and almost like magic to see those creations manifest over night into reality. While a big step in the right direction simply using 3D printing or CNC wasn’t enough, the result still felt unfinished and looked like a toy. Instead, a process and style was developed that uses 3D Printing & CNC as a base to start from with all of the individual pieces then undergoing a long process of hand work, assembly, hand painting & lacquer finishing to bring further quality, depth and feel to the magical creation. Through this process of mixing modern technology and classic hand crafting a unique characteristic is given to each of the items sometimes making the final piece feel as if it was just dug from an ancient tomb or discovered in the archives of some long lost traveling showman.

Due to the hand crafted nature of each of the pieces Anthony and his team can only produce a limited number of items each year with majority of the pieces going to collectors and enthusiasts from around the world.
