EFFECT
In brief, a hole punched into one sheet of paper invisibly flies to another sheet of paper in the possession of a spectator. The handling is convincing. The effect is magical.
INTRODUCTION
HOLE FLIGHT has been a kept a closely guarded secret for many years. While I have performed the trick hundreds of times for lay audiences, I had carefully kept it away from the watchful eyes of magicians. Frankly, I wanted to keep it exclusive. In January, 1978, I decided to use the routine during an IBM Ring 50 close-up night. This was the first time HOLE FLIGHT was ever performed in front of magicians. The effect created quite a sensation. In reviewing my performance of the trick in the Ring newsletter, Augie Arnstein wrote the following. “Have you ever seen holes jump from one side of the room to the other? I had never until Harvey performed this miracle.” After that one demonstration of the routine, word about the effect got around. Shortly thereafter, I was inundated with requests for the handling from magicians in all parts of the U.S. To date, I have only shared the effect with a few trusted friends. Now it is your turn to learn, use, and enjoy a unique magical experiment.
I would like to thank Tom Gagnon for his superb illustrations and cover design. His artwork greatly facilitated the task of writing up the routine. My thanks also go to Nick DeCiutiis for painstakingly photographing a rather complex series of moves. Jack Birnman took the time out of his busy schedule to read and try to make sense out of my efforts to describe the routine. His suggestions are greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank my wife, Mona, and my daughter, Ruth, for helping with the many details required to put this book together.
