Charles Joseph Carter, better known as Carter the Great, was one of the most celebrated stage magicians of the early 20th century. Rising to international fame during the 1920s, he captivated audiences with large-scale illusions and dramatic escapes that helped define the golden age of magic.
 
Highlights of his performances included the classic sawing a woman in half illusion, making a live elephant disappear, and his daring “Cheating the Gallows” escape.
 
Carter died in 1936, but his legend continued long after the curtain fell.
