Bashful Trick Lock and Cigar Cutter
 
“This is known as the bashful lock. It opens behind your back.”
 
An unusual antique combination magic trick, mechanical puzzle and functional cigar cutter manufactured by Tafo Mfg. Co., Los Angeles, California.
 
The lock challenges someone to open it normally, but refuses to cooperate. When the performer takes the “bashful” lock behind their back, it mysteriously opens. The secret is mechanical and requires no key. This particular early version also incorporates a cigar cutter.
 
The Bashful Trick Lock was designed by Charles G. Taylor and patented in 1915 (U.S. Patent No. 1,136,735). Period examples are documented as having been manufactured by Tafo Mfg. Co. in Los Angeles.
 
This example is especially desirable because it remains mounted to its original illustrated display card, something missing from nearly every loose example currently on the market.
 
CONDITION NOTES: Overall in good antique condition with age and storage wear. The metal lock/cigar cutter has surface wear, oxidation, discoloration and scratches. The original display card has staining, discoloration, edge and corner wear, creasing, scuffs and general handling wear.
